University built firm foundations for a career in international business
Since leaving the University of Gloucestershire, Daniel Jeffery’s career in business has gone from strength to strength. And this year the company he works for – Concilium Search Ltd – received a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category this year.
Daniel has been a part of the company from the outset. Today he is a Senior Partner at Concilium, which now joins just over 7,000 UK enterprises which have received this Royal recognition since the Awards were established in 1965.
Daniel studied Business Management at the university, which he says has given him a hugely valuable foundation of running teams and divisions in an international business.
“Whether that be from the real-life simulations undertaken during final year which helped me develop the skills to digest critical information and make informed decisions quickly, or more theoretical approaches to business operations and marketing strategies, the range of learning from my time at UoG has helped me contribute to Concilium Search’s growth since its inception in January 2015 in a variety of ways.”
Daniel relocated to New York City in 2018 to help establish and build the American division of the company. And he feels that his university experiences have continued to shape his career.

“Learning the nuances of different cultural approaches to business – as taught by Dr Jun Zhang while I was at UoG – has been integral to building relationships with international clients around the world. With Concilium Search having been awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise in the International Business category, I feel that this course has added some of the greatest value to my ongoing career. Since graduating I have been sent on international assignment by my firm and continue to use lessons learnt from Dr Zhang on a regular basis.
“And my advice for current students would be to take advantage of any placement or internship opportunities, especially if they are with smaller organizations. I love being part of a fast-growing, agile business where my ideas have a direct impact on the direction of the business – and I worked for a small company on placement as well. The allure of working for a big name multinational can certainly be exciting, but the variety of experience generally available in smaller companies can be even more rewarding.”
