{"id":2134,"date":"2015-01-17T19:56:56","date_gmt":"2015-01-17T19:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/?page_id=2134"},"modified":"2019-03-25T14:14:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T14:14:30","slug":"past-winners","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/novel-writing-contest\/past-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"Past Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Since the <a href=\"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/novel-writing-contest\/\">UoG Novel Writing Contest<\/a> has now become an annual feature of our course, we thought it only fair that we create a separate page to commemorate our past winners, as well as the worthy finalists and shortlisted entries.&nbsp; So so page will serve as a trophy room of sorts, and grow every year as more names are added &#8211; very similar to those odd plaques you see in the halls of secondary schools, which you can (should you wish) return to check out, and revel in past glories&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2016 Contest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Selected by our in-house judges, the shortlisted entrants for the 2016 UoG Novel Writing Contest were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>All The Things We Knew <\/em>by Senja Andrejevic<em> (MA)<\/em><\/li><li><em>The Enlightenment Effect<\/em> by Loz Apperly (2nd year)<\/li><li><em>Half-Life<\/em> by Heather Cripps (3rd year)<\/li><li><em>Winter and Spain<\/em> by Sam James (2nd year)<\/li><li><em>Mayflies<\/em> by Pamela Keevil (MA)<\/li><li><em>Mama<\/em> by Mark Webber (MA)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These were sent to our judge,&nbsp;literary agent Becky Thomas of Johnson &amp; Alcock, who chose the following three finalists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>All The Things We Knew <\/em>by Senja Andrejevic&nbsp;(1st Prize)<\/li><li><em>Mayflies<\/em> by Pamela Keevil (2nd Prize)<\/li><li><em>Mama<\/em> by Mark Webber (3rd Prize)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2015 Contest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The fiercely contested 2015 shortlist, selected by our in-house judges, consisted of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Eva<\/em> by Phil Bowne<\/li><li><em>Year<\/em> <em>One<\/em> by Heather Cripps<\/li><li><em>The Masterpiece<\/em> by Rod Griffiths<\/li><li><em>Paper Boats<\/em> by Keely O\u2019Shaughnessy<\/li><li><em>Claro<\/em> by Meg Paul<\/li><li><em>All the Things We Knew<\/em> by Senja <span id=\"spnFrom\" class=\"rwRRO\" title=\"senja.liverpool@yahoo.co.uk\">Andrejevic<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, literary agent Becky Thomas chose the following finalists, with Phil Bowne winning the \u00a3100 1st prize for his wonderful extract of <em>Eva<\/em> (which incidentally also won the prize for best BA dissertation of the year):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Eva<\/em> by Phil Bowne (1st place)<\/li><li><em>Paper Boats<\/em> by Keely O&#8217;Shaughnessy (2nd Place)<\/li><li><em>Claro<\/em> by Meg Paul (3rd place)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2014 Contest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 4th, at the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/2014\/12\/05\/carnival-opens-on-campus\/\"><em>Carnival: New Writing III<\/em> <\/a>we announced the winners of our inaugural Novel Writing Contest. It was an exciting and suspense-filled occassion, and competition was tough.&nbsp; The shortlist consisted of six entries, which were forwarded to our judge, literary agent Becky Thomas of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxmason.com\/\">Fox Mason Agency<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Churchill<\/em> by Sleiman El Hajj<\/li><li><em>The Good Housewife\u2019s Frontal Lobotomy<\/em> by Jane Durston<\/li><li><em>The Making of Robin Mountjoy<\/em> by Sue Pearce<\/li><li><em>Matlock<\/em> by Duncan Dicks<\/li><li><em>Things We Should Have Done<\/em> by Hayley Barnes<\/li><li><em>Vid[dot]mov<\/em> by Emmy Summers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From that, Becky narrowed it down to three finalists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Things We Should Have Done<\/em> by Hayley Barnes (BA student)<\/li><li><em>Matlock<\/em> by Duncan Dicks (PhD student)<\/li><li><em>The Good Housewife\u2019s Frontal Lobotomy<\/em> by Jane Durston (MA student)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall winner of the \u00a3100 prize was Duncan Dicks, for <em>Matlock<\/em>, and here is an excerpt of Becky&#8217;s judge&#8217;s citation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8216;I loved the central character, the setting, the coming of age element, the mystery of the Mappe and the conflated emotions of those formative years&#8230;It felt very Kes or Son of Rambow to me.
