{"id":2079,"date":"2014-12-08T21:58:12","date_gmt":"2014-12-08T21:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/?p=2079"},"modified":"2014-12-08T21:58:12","modified_gmt":"2014-12-08T21:58:12","slug":"inaugural-uog-novel-writing-contest-winner-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/2014\/12\/08\/inaugural-uog-novel-writing-contest-winner-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural UoG Novel Writing Contest Winner Announced!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/2014\/12\/05\/carnival-opens-on-campus\/\"><em>Carnival: New Writing III<\/em> <\/a>was made even more exciting (if that was possible) by the announcement on the night of the winner of our inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/novel-writing-contest\/\">UoG Novel Writing Contest<\/a>.\u00a0 For those playing catch-up, the contest is open to all students enrolled on our Creative Writing BA or MA courses, or studying with us for a PhD &#8211; as well as exchange students, joints, and even students taking a single Creative Writing module.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/2014\/07\/09\/novel-writing-contest-shortlist\/\">shortlist <\/a>of six entries was sent to our judge, literary agent Becky Thomas of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxmason.com\/\">Fox Mason Agency<\/a>, who selected her three <a href=\"https:\/\/uniofglos.blog\/creativewriting\/2014\/11\/28\/inaugural-uog-novel-writing-contest-finalists-announced\/\">finalists<\/a>.\u00a0 Of those, we&#8217;re very proud to announce that the 1st place winner, and recipient of the \u00a3100 prize, was PhD student Duncan Dicks.\u00a0 Becky provided a professional industry critique for all three finalists, and here is an extract from her critique of Duncan&#8217;s novel, <em>Matlock<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><em>I loved the central character, the setting, the coming of age element, the mystery of the Mappe and the conflated emotions of those formative years&#8230;It felt very Kes or Son of Rambow to me.
