Cheltenham Poetry Festival 2018<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Cheltenham Poetry Festival has been sponsored by The University of Gloucestershire <\/strong>and the empowering programme features performances by staff and students.<\/p>\n

The Festival, which has been described as\u00a0‘ A poetry party with a healthy dose of anarchy’<\/em>\u00a0by the\u00a0Guardian<\/strong> offers a jam packed programme of readings, performances, cinema, music and socially conscious workshops on the theme of \u2018power\u2019.<\/p>\n

On offer this year is a workshop with poet Peter Raynard<\/strong> called Fight the Power<\/strong> and plus\u00a0David Punter<\/strong>, Professor of Poetry <\/strong>at the University of Bristol<\/strong> talks about anarchy, capitalism and political poetry.<\/p>\n

Highlights of 2018 include\u00a0BBC\u00a0<\/strong>Radio 6<\/em><\/strong>Music’s Poet in Residence<\/strong>\u00a0Murray Lachlan Young –<\/strong>\u00a0\u2018A rock \u2018n\u2019 roll poet of our time\u2019 (<\/em>Chrissie Hynde<\/strong>),‘Chap hop’s leading exponent’<\/em>\u00a0(The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/strong>)\u00a0Professor Elemental<\/strong>, Salford rising star\u00a0JB Barrington<\/strong>,\u00a0hip hop artist\u00a0TrueMendous<\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a0‘the missing link between Jarvis Cocker and Roger McGough’<\/em>\u00a0(Irish Times<\/em><\/strong>)\u00a0Vinny Peculiar<\/strong>,\u00a0internationally acclaimed writer\u00a0Amir Darwish<\/strong>, ex judo champ\u00a0turned poet\u00a0Owen Lowery<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0TS Eliot Prize<\/strong>\u00a0winner\u00a0Jacob Polley.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As ever the Festival welcomes some of the UK\u2019s most important contemporary poets to the Festival. They include\u00a0Jonathan Davidson,<\/strong>\u00a0Martyn Crucefix<\/strong>,\u00a0Sam Willets,<\/strong>\u00a0Costa- Prize<\/strong>\u00a0winner\u00a0Jonathan Edwards,\u00a0Rishi Dastidar, Pat Borthwick,<\/strong>\u00a0Gill McEvoy, Peter Raynard, Tom Sastry,\u00a0Wayne Holloway Smith,<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Cora Greenhill<\/strong>,\u00a0Adam Horovitz, Jane Commane, Chrys Salt, Rachael Allen, Patrick Mackie<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ben Wilkinson\u00a0<\/strong>to name just a few!<\/p>\n

Also on offer are poetry film showcases from\u00a0Elephants Footprint<\/em><\/strong>, a screening of the critically acclaimed film\u00a0Love Somehow<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a poetic re- telling of Caitlin’s Relationship with\u00a0Dylan Thomas<\/strong>\u00a0(staring\u00a0Griff Rhys Jones<\/strong>\u00a0as the voice of Dylan), Scarestories<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0– a multi-media dystopian vision of the western word featuring poetry from\u00a0David Clarke<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Students from the University will appear in Bar Room Bars<\/strong> on the opening day of the festival and will compete in the Flash Fiction Slam <\/strong>\u2013 an exciting live literature event in which new writers from the University of Gloucestershire Creative Writing Course<\/strong> perform micro fiction in front of a judging panel and the Festival audience.<\/p>\n

University of Gloucestershire staff also appear at the festival with a multi media poetry cinema event (April 25th)<\/sup> featuring Angela France\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0collection\u00a0The Hill\u00a0– a remarkable sequence of poems that leads us up the winding footpaths of Leckhampton Hill near Cheltenham and a reading from Lania Knight<\/strong> from her new novel\u00a0Remnant\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013\u00a0a\u00a0science fiction novel set in the American Midwest.( April 22).<\/p>\n
