Jess Medway shoots zine work and work for the Superdry brief for the Editorial Photography with Moving Image module

One of the aspects for this module was to create a 12 page zine to go along side our collaborative moving image piece.

My specialisation is music and portraiture photography, which is why I focused on exactly that throughout this zine, The Making of Felicity Mitchell, a 3rd year music student.

I am a massive fan of candid images,  but when shooting primarily in the studio its hard to get the genuine reactions I want without them being super posed.

Which is why during the shoot for this zine, we just had fun. There were funky outfit changes, music blasting the entire time and we were just cracking jokes do get the desired outcome.

Which is why the first page once the zine is opened is just a collage of super candid photos I captured during this time. I can’t for the life of me remember what ws so funny, but what ever it was I am glad it got some proper belly laughs so I could capture these first few images.

The rest of this zine follows Felicity through the music recording process and the preparing for a performance, but is kept with her style of ‘feeling things so intensely’ (as quoted by her mini about me at the very front) so I presented some of the images In a slight scrapbook style as I felt like that showed her personality the most.

SUPERDRY

Another aspect of the module was to work with a live brief given by the art director at Superdry, to create images for the new summer campaign. They were heavily focused on wanting to have the nostalgic vibes as the 80s-90s style is very in right now thanks to pop culture aspects such as the Netflix show Stranger Things.

Because of this I wanted to shoot everything on film and have it feel very retro. Such as neon lights and arcades. And so I took models to the local arcade to shoot for this campaign, whilst not giving the most summery vibes possible I still like the aesthetic that comes from shooting this campaign in film.
