IDENTITY. Can You Keep A Secret.

Hi

As part of our celebrations for LGBT History Month, we have another guest, well actually two, Matt Wester and Emma Mawby. Matt and Emma are both members of the LGBT Partnership Cheltenham. However, the post features their entry for the University’s 2017 Celebrating Diversity Competition sponsored by The Media School. Their entry was Highly Commended. Whilst you can of course read the poem yourself, I’d encourage you to take the time and listen to the audio.

Can you keep a secret?

A really, really big secret?

Some people I’m told like cheese, others, so they say enjoy travel,

Then there are people who are tall, maybe brunette from a bottle,

Perhaps like to cook or enjoy running,

Of course some like watching movies, ballet and rugby,

Occasionally sketching and painting,

Reading but seeing their unread book pile growing ever larger,

Going to gigs, concerts and operas,

Spending time with their friends walking dogs across muddy fields in search of cosy cafes,

Don’t forget those who like wine,

Don’t like the number between 12 and 14, but love the number 8,

Count magpies and throw salt over their left shoulder if they spill it,

Or the ones who can say hello, please, thank you and goodbye in many languages but then dive for the phrasebook,

Will never get on a motorbike and wouldn’t walk a tightrope for all the tea that used to be in China,

Let me tell you a secret,

Some of them are Trans,

Funnily enough, that doesn’t define them.

Emma Mawby
