Lewis Arnold: Directing Child Actors

During lockdown things are looking a little different and we have had to adapt to a new way of teaching and learning. However we haven’t changed what we teach and that includes our brilliant industry guests who come in to chat with our students. Last week we were joined (on a pet friendly zoom call) by UoG Alumni and Director, Lewis Arnold to talk about working with child actors. With credits such as Broadchurch, Humans and the recent BBC series Dark Money, he was able to give our students an excellent insight into every stage of the process when working with child actors.

Lewis has returned to the Film Production course on several occasions to talk to students, give lectures and lead directing workshops and we are glad that quarantine hasn’t stopped him! On our hour long zoom call we were able to talk through the process of casting, rehearsals and right through to production with plenty of useful tips and tricks. He shared audition and rehearsal clips, then compared them to the final scenes to give our students real examples of directing techniques. He gave advice on where to look for actors and answered questions from our students. Prior to the call he also took the time to read through some of our third year graduate projects that are awaiting production. This meant he could provide each crew with specific advice and guidelines to follow.

This guest lecture was certainly beneficial for so many of our students, to receive advice and knowledge from a current industry professional is invaluable. We are very grateful for the time given and cannot wait for future workshops and lectures.
