Alumni Spotlight: Alternative careers in law
6th August 2021
A law degree is extremely transferable, and we really enjoy hearing about the different roles and organisations our alumni progress in to, using the skills and knowledge obtained from their LLB.
Tim Langton has taken the time to tell us about his current role in a Commercial Department which highly utilises his experiences from the degree. Tim studied with us from 2014 and graduated in 2017. During his studies, Tim got involved in all aspects of University life, acting as a Committee Member of the Law Society, being one of the first legal advisors with the University’s Law Clinic and representing the University at multiple inter-university Mooting competitions. After graduating from the University of Gloucestershire, Tim completed his MSc & LPC and worked in a range of legal roles. Tim’s current role is as a Commercial Officer.

“I completed the LLB at UOG in 2017, and I now currently work in the Commercial Department of a Defence and Aerospace company (Ultra Precision Control Systems) in Cheltenham. The role is incredibly varied; solving commercial issues, negotiating contracts and non disclosure agreements, assisting all departments in understanding our obligations, and looking for process improvements are some of the many tasks I work.
It certainly is interesting, and something that I never considered while on the degree – hopefully it will help students consider career paths that they might not have considered otherwise”.
We really encourage our students to think about career goals beyond the traditional routes into law and Tim’s experiences are an excellent example of how you can use your legal knowledge and skills in a specialist and highly interesting industry.
