Darts, Sport and Classics

While reading around darts, I came across this quote from darts commentator Sid Waddell who once said (of Eric Bristow – “the crafty cockney”) :

‘When Alexander the Great was 33 he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer. Bristow is only 27.’

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~loxias/sporting_quotes.htm has more examples of classical references in sporting quotes..

p.s. – for Darts anoraks – some interesting facts about Bristow: he is a Polydactyl (he has six toes on his right foot), and also suffered from Dartitis – which is a psychological condition – which meant he somehow felt himself to be unable to let go of his dart when throwing it. The Oxford English Dictionary may well include dartitis in its next edition – see http://www.darts.150m.com/Dartitisviews.htm for details.
OK – I promise no more darts-facts, before we get off the topic… Comments on the post below (is darts a ‘sport’?) are still welcome.
