500 year old graffiti in the University Archives

The University Archives and Special Collections will be holding an open day for the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society (BGAS) Library in the Archive Room at FCH on Saturday 16th July. This event is part of the Council for British Archaeology’s Festival of Archaeology, and many rare antiquarian books will be on display.

Our oldest holding is an edition of the works of Roman scholar Velleius Paterculus, printed in Basel in 1520. The book is a beautiful example of a Renaissance volume, and is made even more interesting by the addition of 500 year old graffiti on its pages!

Imagine, a Tudor scholar doodling on the pages whilst bored with their studies!
