BGAS Library Open Day

The University Archives and Special Collections will be holding an open day for the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society (BGAS) Library on Saturday 21st July, 10am – 4pm. We act as custodians for the Society’s extensive library, covering many aspects of history and archaeology in Bristol, Gloucestershire and beyond. Our oldest volume dates from 1520 and the Library is still expanding today.
The open day is part of the Council for British Archaeology’s Festival of British Archaeology fortnight which sees events taking place across the country in July. You can search for this and other events here.
We will have on display some of the Library’s oldest and rarest items, as well as providing access to the rest of the Library’s holdings with archive staff on hand to give advice. If you are beginning to take an interest in local history or are a fully-fledged historical researcher – the BGAS Library will have something to interest you.
This year marks the 300th anniversary of the publication of the first edition of Sir Robert Atkyn’s landmark text ‘The Ancient and Present State of Gloucestershire’. We will have our rare first edition on display at the open day.
