World Book Day – 7th March

Did you know that today is World Book Day? A celebration of books and reading across the world. I remember as a child receiving book tokens through school, a practice that still happens today. The University Archives and Special Collections holds approximately 10,000 books dating from 1520 to the present day in collections such as:
- the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society (BGAS) Library
- the Gloucestershire Poets, Writers and Artists (GPWA) Collection
- the Paul Oliver Collection of African-American Music and Related Traditions (Blues Collection)
- the Local Heritage Initiative (LHI) Collection
- the University Archive
- the Archive Collection of books relating to our other principle collections
Subjects covered are wide ranging, from history and archaeology resources to blues music to books on the heritage of local areas across England to teacher training practice over the past 160 years and counting. Whether you are interested in Cotswold sheep, Hadrians Wall, teacher training in Cheltenham, Georgian poets, the Great Exhibition of 1851 or folk songs of the Caribbean (and just about everything in between!), the University Archives and Special Collections may have a book of interest to you.
