The University Archives and Special Collections at FCH (QU024) are taking part in this year’s Explore Your Archive publicity campaign, run by The National Archives. Archive services across the country in different sectors will be holding special activities during the week 16 – 22 November with the aim of getting more people using their archive service. This year we are holding the following events to coincide with the campaign:

Friday 15 November (just before the official week begins) – archive teaching session for year 2 English Language students

Tuesday 19 November – archive teaching session for year 2 History students

Wednesday 20 November, 1-4pm– Afternoon Tea with the Archives. A special session for any staff interested in using archive and special collections material as part of their teaching, or who just want to discover more about our holdings. Light refreshments will be provided!

Saturday 23 November – St Paul’s College 1963-1966 Reunion

Throughout the week – Displays of archive and special collections material in QU024 and the Crush Hall at FCH

Please look out for our campaign posters featuring a variety of images from our collections.

We invite students and staff to explore the University Archives and Special Collections all year round! The University of Gloucestershire Archives and Special Collections is the home of several collections. The University Archive charts the history of the institution from the 1840s and is made up of documents, photographs and multi-media, maps and plans, clothing, ephemera and digital records.

We also house the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society (BGAS) research library, made up of over 8,000 items dating from 1520 to the present day.

Our Gloucestershire Poets, Writers and Artists (GPWA) special collection incorporates several collections including the Dymock Poets Archive and Study Centre, U. A. Fanthorpe archive, Whittington Press Collection, Cyder Press collection and James Elroy Flecker collection.

The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail Collection charts the inception and creation of the Sculpture Trail in the Forest of Dean from 1986. Material covers organisational and administrative material, Trust documentation, correspondence and a range of artist works from the earliest to the most recent, as well as examples of other sculpture trails and exhibitions. The artists include David Nash, Patrick Dougherty, Auke de Vries, Carole Draper, Annie Cattrell, and Ian Hamilton-Finlay.

Our Local Heritage Initiative (LHI) collection encompasses the outputs from an England-wide project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund between 2000 and 2006. Communities were encouraged to establish projects which explored their unique local heritage and covered aspects such as archaeology, industry, the natural and built environment and customs and traditions. Communities then produced items such as booklets, multimedia and oral histories which form the basis of the collection.
