New Special Collections and Archives Internships

There are currently three new internship opportunities in the Special Collections and Archives. University of Gloucestershire students can apply for these via the Future Plan portal:
Independent Television News (ITN) Stills Archive Internship x2
The ITN Stills Archive came to the SCA in Summer 2017. It incorporates over 25,000 photographic stills used by ITN in broadcast journalism during the 1970s and 1980s. The collection covers national and international news stories during this era, with topics such as crime, war, politics and even the abominable snowman. It is a rich and exciting archive which is currently uncatalogued.
The two interns will focus on the three boxes of photographic stills covering royalty. The main tasks will be to:
- Sort through and re-package the images, establishing any original order where possible, and if not putting the images into a useable order
- Identify any conservation issues
- Catalogue each image on to Excel and then our online archive catalogue by recording key information such as subject, date and copyright information
- Digitise each image, front and back, to preservation standards using Adobe CS
- Write a blog post about the experience
The interns will benefit from working alongside an experienced archivist on an as yet un-researched collection. Full training will be given on both archive cataloguing and digitisation for preservation. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience of working with a photographic archive, being the first people to search through the material and making it accessible for future researchers. If you have a keen eye for detail, interest in documentary photography and relish the thought of delving into un-researched archive collections, this position could be right for you.
Location – University of Gloucestershire Special Collections and Archives, Delta Place, 27 Bath Road, Cheltenham, GL53 7TH.
Duration – 80 hours per internship, to be completed between now and the end of May 2018. Although working hours can be flexible, it is recommended you agree a certain number of hours/ days that you’re able to come in each week to ensure the internship is completed on time. The archivist works Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 8.15am – 6pm, and interns will be able to come in during these times.

University Archive Accessions Project Internship x1
The University of Gloucestershire’s Special Collections and Archives (SCA) service is home to several archival and special collections charting the history of the University and beyond. An opportunity has arisen for a project intern to accession part of our University Archive.
The University Archive is the official repository for documents and objects from the University of Gloucestershire and predecessor colleges. Originally founded in 1847 as a teacher training college, we have a lineage of over 40 institutions which fed into what is now the University of Gloucestershire. This rich and varied history is curated in our University Archive.
Archive services accession material as the first part of the cataloguing process. The intern will be accessioning new material into our University Archive. This will involve:
- Sorting through boxes of previously unaccessioned material relating to the history of the University and predecessor colleges, and checking it is relevant to become part of the University Archive
- Identify any conservation issues and repackage where necessary
- Describe/ box list the new material using Excel and Word. You’ll be looking for key information such as what the document/ object is, the covering dates, the information it contains and where it came from. You’ll then write a brief description using the information you’ve found
- Select some material to catalogue onto the online archive catalogue, with the help of the archivist
- Write a blog post about the experience
The interns will benefit from working alongside an experienced archivist on an as yet un-sorted collection. Full training will be given on accessioning, packaging and archive cataloguing. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience of working within an archive service and learning about the process of archival cataloguing. We’re looking for someone who is methodical, pays attention to detail and fancies exploring previously uncatalogued material, you could discover some real gems!
