Alfred Cartledge attended Cooke Street School in Longton, Staffordshire, before joining the 1913 – 1915 year group. He was the son of David and Gertrude who lived at 29 Station Road, Meir, Longton, Stoke on Trent.

Alfred left college to become a Private in the 2/6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in the Pas de Calais region on 21 March 1918 at the age of 24. Having no known grave he is recorded on the Arras Memorial.
