Alfred Walkley was born in Cheltenham in 1895.

He became a Private in the 23rd Battalion London Regiment being deployed in the High Wood region of The Somme, where many of his fellow Practising School pupils had lost their lives over the previous year. He died during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on 15 September 1916 aged 21, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial as he had no grave.
