Bertram Frith Packer attended Monega Road School in East Ham before passing his college entrance exam in 1909. He also passed a government certified exam in Mathematics. Bertram attended the Cheltenham Training College from 1910 – 1912. After leaving college he married Catherine and lived at 369 High Street North, Manor Park, London, while his parents lived at Forest Gate.

He became a Second Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion Suffolk Regiment and died on 29th October 1917, aged 25. He was initially laid to rest, then exhumed and re-buried at Loos British Cemetery. His headstone reads “Greater Love Hath No Man”.
