Cedric Harry Smith came from Chepstow, where he had been a pupil teacher at Even Swindon (Mixed) School. His parent were Thomas and Emmeline, living at St Arvans, Chepstow. Cedric was part of the 1908 – 1910 year group at Cheltenham.
He went on to gain the rank of Captain in the 229th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery, and was distinguished with the award of a Military Cross for having performed an act of gallantry as a commissioned officer. Cedric was stationed in the Ypres sector when he died at the age of 28 on 31 October 1917. He is buried at The Huts Cemetery in Belgium.
