Charles Arthur Coles lived at 16 Duke Street and was the son of Joseph and Jane Coles. Prior to the war he worked at a bootmakers in Portland Street and joined the Territorial Army.
He travelled to France as a Private in the 5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in March 1915. It was in Italy where he injured his arm and he was killed by a shell explosion at the dressing station on 15 June 1918. Charles was 24 years old and is buried in Manaboschi Cemetery where his headstone reads “Nobly He Died”.
