Charles William Rawlings became a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. He was the only child of William and Mary Rawlings of Marle Hill Road, and attended the Practising School between 1902 and 1909. After that he worked in the offices of the Cheltenham Original Brewery Company and was a member of St Paul’s Church Choir.
Charles died of wounds in Belgium on 28 September 1917, age 22, and is buried at Mendinghem Cemetery where his grave is marked by a cross.
