Surname: Clough

Rank: Private

Regiment: Northumberland Fusiliers

Institution: Cheltenham Training College

Clarence Schofield Clough came from Sheffield to join the 1914 – 1916 year group. His college nickname was “Spug”. Clarence enlisted as a Private in the 25th Battalion (Tyneside Irish) Northumberland Fusiliers, and was fighting in the Arras region when he was killed on 21 March 1918. The entry in the battalion diary for the day is as follows:

Artillery fire of a thunderous kind can be heard for miles along the front. Clouds of sickly gas from the enemy lines is affecting us. Severe machine gun fire from one end of the trench which we occupy forces us to take cover… A German aeroplane is dropping bombs on us and the runner, Lance Corporal Jobson, and many others are killed outright… Scores of officers and men are lying mutilated in holes in the side of this huge trench. We tried to do something for them but are powerless on account of the shell-fire. The Germans are now seen advancing in massed formation…

His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
