Cyril Henry Cox was born on 12 June 1899. He lived at 5 Newent Place, Marsh Lane, while attending St Paul’s Practising School from 2 October 1905. He went on to gain a scholarship to Cheltenham (Pates) Grammar School, and later became a Clerk at Lloyds Bank in Swindon.

Cyril became a Private in the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment and was killed in action at Villers Bretonneux on 24 April 1918. His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. He was 21 years old.
