David Hawling was born in St Paul’s in 1882, and prior to enlisting worked for the Cheltenham Original Brewery Company (on the site of The Brewery).

He enlisted as a Private in the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in September 1914, travelling to France in August 1915. He was killed on the first day of the Battle of Loos, 25 September 1915, alongside nine other ex-Practising School pupils. David was 33 years old and is buried at Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos . He left a wife, Beatrice Caroline, who lived at 11 Nailsworth Terrace.
