Edgar Howard Gardner came from West Ham and studied at Cheltenham between 1903 – 1905. He was the son of Franklin and Louisa J. Gardner who later moved to Brighton, and he himself worked as a Headmaster at the Council School, Colchester.
Edgar became a Pioneer in the 4th Company Special Brigade Royal Engineers and died on 22 October 1916, aged 32. He is buried at Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte, where his headstone reads “This We Know Dear Lad, All’s Well”.
