Edward Lewis Keen was born on 14 February 1895 to Charles Lewis and Mary Elizabeth Keen of 5 Marle Hill Parade. He attended the Practising School from 2 September 1907 to 30 June 1910, when he left to become a solicitor’s clerk.

Edward enlisted as a Private in the 1st/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment where he served in the Somme sector. He was killed on 27 August 1916, age 21, near Mouquet Farm, Ovillers-La-Boisselle and is buried at Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval. Edward was initially buried elsewhere and exhumed. He is also commemorated on the headstone of his grandparents William Daniel and Charlotte Keen in Cheltenham Borough Cemetery.
