Edwin Ormonde Browning was born on 26 May 1892, the son of Edwin and Elizabeth Ann Browning of 2 Monson Terrace, Cheltenham. He was a student at Cheltenham Training College from 1910 – 1912, and prior to that had been a pupil at St Paul’s Practising School. Whilst at College, Edwin had been a member of the 1st Rugby Team.

He was a Second Lieutenant in the 11th Battalion attached to the 7th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, and saw action in Gallipoli, Egypt and Mesopotamia. He died on 20 April 1916, age 23, whilst trying to relieve the besieged garrison at Kut-al-Amara, in modern-day Iraq. Edwin has no known grave and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
