Ernest Davis was born in 1896, the son of Mary Ann and Fred Davis of 1 Brunswick Street, St Paul’s.
He enlisted into the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment as a Private in September 1914, and sailed to France on 8 August 1915. He was killed age 19 on the first day of the Battle of Loos, 25 September 1915, and as there is no known grave he is commemorated on the Loos memorial. He was one of nine ex-Practising School pupils to die on the same day of the conflict.
