Ernest George Smith was born at Cleeve Hill and later lived at Conderton Villas, Hailes Road, Cheltenham with his wife Esther. After leaving school he became an Inspector for the Cheltenham Tram Company.
Ernest originally joined the Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars as a Private but was transferred to the 8th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. He was 19 when he died in a hospital on the Western Front on 21 April 1918, after being wounded. Ernest is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery where his grave is marked by a cross.
