Ernest Richard Artus was born in 1881 and worked at Billings the Builders on Winchcombe Street.
He had previously served in the South African War or “Second Boer War” at the turn of the twentieth century. Ernest was a Sergeant in the 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and was one of nine ex-Practising School pupils to die on the first day of the Battle of Loos, 25 September 1915. He was 34 and left a widow and six children, and is buried at Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos.
