Frank William Howard Smith was a member of the 1902 – 1904 year group at Cheltenham Training College. Previously he had attended Widden Street School in Gloucester. Whilst at college he was an Umpire for the cricket team. Frank went on to live at 50 Copers Cope Road, Beckenham, Kent, with his wife May.

He became a Lieutenant in the 19th Battalion London Regiment and was fighting in Northern France when he was killed on 4 December 1917, age 34. Frank was laid to rest in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, where his headstone reads “Amamus, Amavimus, Amabimus”, Latin for “We Loved, We Love and We Shall Love”.
