Fred Daniels had been a pupil at St John’s School, Ladywood, Birmingham, before studying in Cheltenham 1907 – 1909. He gained a distinction in his examinations for Mathematics. Fred was a member of the Troy house group while he was training to become a teacher. After college he went on to marry Nellie and lived at 39 Lordswood Road, Harborne, Birmingham.

Fred became a Second Lieutenant in the 2/5th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and was fighting in Northern France when he died on 3 December 1917, aged 29. He had been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry as a commissioned officer. Fred has no known grave and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
