Frederick James Brown worked at Bastin & Son Lithographers in Bennington Street after leaving the Practising School.

He enlisted as a Private in the 14th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, a Bantam Battalion for soldiers below the Army’s minimum height of 5’ 3”. Frederick died on 22 October 1917 while taking part in an offensive to push the enemy back past Holthulst Forest near Passchendaele Village. His regiment initially succeeded in this objective but had to fall back later in the day.  Frederick has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. He was 23 and had been living at 15 Granville Street. He died on the same day as ex-Practising School pupils Harry Hill and John Cox.
