Frederick James Mace lived at 28 Victoria Street with his wife Minnie. His parents were Sergeant Charles Mace, who also served during the war, and Edith Louisa Mace. Prior to the conflict Frederick worked at Messrs John Lance and Co. Furnishers in the High Street and was a keen member of the Cheltenham Harriers.

He enlisted as a Private in the 12th (Service) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, being wounded during the Battle of the Somme. After recuperating in Cambridge he travelled back to France, was wounded a second time and died during an enemy air raid whilst in hospital on 1 October 1917. Frederick is buried at Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France. He was 40 years old.
