Frederick James Woolnough

Forename: Frederick James

Surname: Woolnough

Rank: Lance Corporal

Regiment: Royal Regiment of Scotland

Institution: St Paul’s Practising School

Frederick James Woolnough was born on 15 September 1896, son of Howard and Fanny Woolnough, and lived at 261 High Street and later 25 St Paul’s Street North. He attended the Practising School from 1903 to 1911 when he left to enter the world of work.

He had been a member of the St Paul’s Boys’ Brigade and became a Lance Corporal in the 8th Battalion Royal Highlanders (Black Watch).  His battalion and wider division were tasked with capturing the town of Roeux which included heavily defended chemical works. Lack of men coupled with untrained infantry soldiers lead to chaos where allied forces became disorientated and fired on each other. Frederick died during the confusion on 3 May 1917, aged 20. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
