Frederick Wilkinson Crofts was originally from Nottingham and attended Cheltenham Training College to train as a teacher from 1902 – 1904. His parents were James and Elizabeth Crofts and he went on to marry Mary after moving back to the Nottingham area.

Frederick became a Captain in the 17th Battalion London Regiment and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. He died on 15 September 1916 and is buried in the Dartmoor Cemetery at Becordel-Becourt in The Somme region. His headstone reads “Life’s Sweet Gift is Remembrance”. He was 32 years old.
