George John Taylor trained to be a teacher at Cheltenham Training College from 1904 – 1906. Whilst a student he had been a member of the college Soccer Team. George was the son of Noah and Elizabeth Taylor, who lived at Rose Cottage, Brighton Road, Coulsdon, Surrey.

George went on to become a Company Sergeant Major in the 2nd/ 16th Battalion London Regiment (Queen’s Westminster Rifles). He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in battle. He died aged 34 on 10 December 1918, and is buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France. His headstone reads “The beloved and only son of Noah and Elizabeth Taylor. Faithful unto death”.
