George William Miller was born on 12 February 1876, the son of George and Caroline Miller. He lived at 23 Dunalley Parade in St Paul’s.
He served as a trooper during the Boer War and later emigrated to New Zealand where he became an Acting Bombardier in the New Zealand Field Artillery. After becoming ill at Gallipoli he was evacuated to Manchester for recuperation. George then re-joined his unit in Egypt before travelling to France. He died on 6 September 1916 aged 40 whilst fighting in the Somme sector of the Western Front. He is buried at Quarry Cemetery, Montauban where his grave is marked by a cross.
