George William Williams was born on 4 May 1881 to James Williams, a coal dealer. He attended the Practising School from 1888 to 1894, and had connections with the Durham area, perhaps because his father worked in coal.
He initially enlisted as a Private in the Durham Light Infantry before transferring to the 1/4th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. William died whilst fighting in the 2nd Battle for Passchendaele on 26 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, having no known grave. He left a widow, Jane, in County Durham.
