Harry Cyril Lacey had been a pupil at Gloucester Road Council School, Cheltenham, before attending Cheltenham Training College from 1911 – 1913. He went on to work as a teacher at Tewkesbury Senior Council School and later Leckhampton School.

Harry became a Sergeant in the 2nd/ 5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment after enlisting in September 1914. He was wounded and gassed whilst fighting in the Battle of Béthune and died in hospital on 24 April 1918, aged 26. He left behind his parents Joseph and Alice, who lived in Cheltenham. Harry is buried at Aire Communal Cemetery where his grave is marked by a cross.
