Henry Ernest Such was born on 2 August 1876 and his father was a blacksmith. He left the Practising School in 1888 and went on to serve in the South African War.

After being awarded a long service and good conduct medal he became a Band Sergeant in the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars. Henry was a distinguished marksman and served during the First World War as a musketry instructor. He died of tuberculosis on 26 April 1918, aged 41, and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.
