Henry Thomas Cooper was born in 1893, the son of Edward Thomas and Catherine Cooper of 15 Hamilton Place, Cheltenham.

He had worked for seven years at a butcher’s shop in the High Street before enlisting as a Private into the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) in Derby. Newspaper reports of the time say he died whilst on sentry duty at Hooge in Belgium, the same day as the first Battle of Loos, 25 September 1915. Henry was 23. He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. He was one of nine ex-Practising School pupils to lose his life on 25 September 1915.
