Herbert Charles ‘Bert’ Craddock was born on 10 October 1894. His father was Sergeant Major Charles Craddock who ran the Sudeley Arms in Cheltenham prior to the war. Bert attended St Paul’s Practising School from 26 June 1903 while the family were living in Rose and Crown Passage. He left on 22 December 1909 to work. Bert was a well-known local sportsman and member of Cheltenham Swimming Club.

In 1914 he served with the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Yeomanry in Gallipoli and Egypt before being wounded. Bert later became a Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force and survived the war before being tragically killed in a flying accident at Rendcomb Aerodrome. He died on 27 November 1918, the same month his sister Kitty died of influenza. Bert is buried alongside her at Cheltenham Cemetery.
