James David Candy was born in 1875 and lived at 1 Dunalley Parade, Cheltenham. After leaving the Practising School he began a career in the army which saw him rise to the level of Company Sergeant Major in the 6th Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry.
James had already seen active combat during the Boer War. He was killed on 22 August 1917, while fighting under heavy enemy fire to the north of Inverness Copse in the Ypres region. He has no known grave so is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial. His company officer described Company Sergeant Candy as a fine soldier and brave man.
