John Charles Booth was born in London on 7 July 1892 before moving to Charlton Kings. He trained at Cheltenham Training College from 1912 – 1914 and went on to become a teacher in Charlton Kings. His parents John and Mary ran the Royal Hotel in Cheltenham.

John tried to enlist at the outbreak of the war but failed due to poor eyesight. He was later accepted and became a Sergeant in the 3/ 6th (Reserve) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. He was then attached to the Nigeria Regiment, and was shot through the head during combat. He has no know grave and is commemorated on the Dar Es Salaam British and Indian Memorial in Tanzania.
