John Charles Cox was born in December 1890 and lived at 18 Granville Street. He attended St Paul’s Practising School and was the son of John and Elizabeth Cox. Before the war John had worked at W H Smith on The Promenade before moving to Lancashire.

John joined the 14th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and died fighting in the Passchendaele area on 22 October 1917, the same day as his fellow Practising School pupils, Harry Hill and Frederick James Brown.  John left a widow living in Warrington. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
