John Henry Pates was born on 1 February 1887 and lived at 3 Hungerford Street while a pupil at the Practising School. He left in June 1894 to work for Mr A E Woodward, Pianoforte and Music Dealer in the High Street.

John enlisted as a Private in the 2/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in November 1915 before being sent on active service. He died on 18 April 1918 while trying to defend position at Baquerolles Farm, St Venant in France. He was 22 years old. John was initially buried then exhumed and laid to rest at Vielle Chapelle New Military Cemetery, where his grave is marked by a cross.
