John Kelly came from Plumstead and qualified as a teacher in 1909, gaining a distinction in Mathematics. He was also a member of the college rugby team.

John became a Private in the 15th Battalion London Regiment (Prince of Wales’ Own Civil Service Rifles). He died on 19 July 1917 aged 30, leaving his wife Ethel who lived in Bow, London. He is buried in Oak Dump Cemetery, Belgium, where his headstone is inscribed “Thou Hast Given for Me, All Thou Had’st, Thy Life”.
