John Thomson (known as “Jack”) came from Scotforth in Lancashire and studied in Cheltenham from 1899 – 1901.

He joined the 5th Battalion The King’s Liverpool Regiment and became a Second Lieutenant. It is recorded in the College Notes and Directory publication that his six year old daughter wrote to him whilst overseas and said “if you don’t make haste and come home I shall be in big school before you get here”. He was killed on 17 June 1917 and is buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery in Belgium. His headstone reads “In Death’s Dark Vale, I Fear No Ill, With Thee Dear Lord Beside Me”.
