John Walter Hack was the son of John and Mary Hack. After leaving school he worked as a photographer and had a studio in Suffolk Road.

John became a Private in the 2/5th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. On 29 April 1918 he was sheltering in a barn which attracted the enemy shellfire that killed him.
