Joseph Charles Mason was the son of Richard, a Coal Man, and Rosetta. He attended the Practising School from 1898 while living at 16 Albert Street.

Joseph became a Corporal in the 1st Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps and was both gassed and wounded by shrapnel in May 1915. He was sent to Cheshire for convalescence then returned to the Western Front where he was wounded for a second time. After recovering near Stockport he returned to fight for a third time and was awarded the Military Medal. He was killed aged 26 on 29 November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai in France. Having no known grave, Joseph is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial. He left a widow and child in Cheltenham.
